Sony announced on Tuesday the official name of the next version of the platform PlayStation, after six months of unveiling, and also announced the date of its launch.

The Japanese company unveiled the next generation of the platform in April, and now says: “We know that there is a lot of excitement and interest in allowing more what will bring the future of games”. She added : “Today we are proud to share with you that our gaming platform will be called the PlayStation 5 and will be launched in time for the 2020 holiday season.”

In a PlayStation blog, Sony revealed a preview of the joystick that will be shipped with the PlayStation 5 platform. The company said : “One of our goals for the next generation is to deepen the sense of immersion when playing games, and we have had the opportunity with our new console to reimagine how we can add a sense of touch to this immersion”.

The company added: “To this end, there are two major innovations with the new controller in the PlayStation 5. First, we adopt tactile feedback to replace the “rumble” technology found in controllers since the fifth generation of platforms. With tactile technology, the user can feel a wider variety of feedback.

Another innovation is something Sony calls “adaptive trigger”, which is integrated into the trigger buttons (L2 / R2). Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that the player feels a tangible sense of drawing an arc and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain.

Sony explained that by combining Adaptive Triggers with Haptic Feedback, you can get a powerful experience that simulates various actions. Game creators can start getting preliminary versions of the new controller.

Sony has promised to announce more PlayStation 5 details over the coming year, and has promised new things for the PlayStation 4, including Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima.
