Foxit Software, the developer of Foxit PDF Reader, revealed a security breach that allowed third parties to access personal account data for “My Account” users, including customer and company names, emails, phone numbers and passwords.

The company has sold its software, such as PhantomPDF, to more than 100,000 customers from more than 200 countries since its inception in 2001, and currently has more than 325 million users worldwide.

According to Foxit, the free membership service “My Account” gives customers access to trial software downloads, order history, product registration information, troubleshooting, and support information.

However, because the hacked system does not store your payment or credit card data, payment information for affected users has not been compromised.

The system keeps usernames, email addresses, company names, IP addresses, and phone numbers, but it does not retain other personally identifiable information or payment card information.

The company says it has alerted users of the “My Account” service affected by this incident of 328,549 in an e-mail containing a link to the password reset form to inform them of all the risks they are exposed to.

The software manufacturer has notified the data protection authorities and law enforcement agencies of the breach and intends to cooperate with agency investigations, without specifying the date of the security incident. It is not currently known if the breach occurred this week, last month or in previous years.

Foxit recommends that customers be cautious by reviewing account statements and monitoring credit reports to avoid identity theft, and encourages customers using My Account on websites or other services to change passwords to prevent unauthorized access.
