OnePlus 9 Pro review: his pros and cons

OnePlus just can’t take a break these days – and that’s pretty much the company’s fault. Just on the heels of a commendable Update Commitment extension that thrilled us to boost our review score, the new announcement that OnePlus has limited some of the most popular apps to better manage the lifespan of battery and heat, and concerns about the recent not-quite-merging with Oppo and mixing OxygenOS with lesser-loved Oppo software even worry some die-hard fans. In short, the days of a rambling upstart are over and a more mature OnePlus stumbles even if it succeeds, with the OnePlus 9 Pro concisely embodying the struggle.

The pros

Screen Soft, bright, precise and generally uniform colors – this is a good display.
Updates OnePlus has extended its update promise to three years of operating system upgrades and four years of security patches, making it one of the best options in its class.
Speed Among the fastest phones you can buy right now. OnePlus was caught limiting the performance of popular apps, making speeds inconsistent.
Alert slider OnePlus’ branding feature lets you switch between ring styles faster and easier than any other Android phone, and I still love it.
Comfort tone Again, I don’t understand why not all phones have this feature. The ambient light color makes everything easier on the eyes, and every phone at all prices should have it.
Wired charging speed OnePlus’ 65W charge is the fastest you can get in the US, and I can’t stress how convenient it is. It might sound dramatic, but super-fast charging like this changes the way you use a phone.
Wireless charging speed 50W is ridiculously fast – faster than any non-OnePlus phone in the US can charge wired. Crazy.
Camera colors Hasselblad colors are stunning and can sometimes be much closer to what the eye sees.

The cons

Update quality The company has a questionable record for rapid operating system updates with a history of buggy versions and an at times inconsistent release cycle. And sometimes these updates decrease …
Performance While some early benchmarks showed inexplicable incongruities, it appears that OnePlus has slashed the device’s performance further with updates, “optimizing” power consumption in a way that selectively worsens some apps.
So-so battery life It’s more consistent now, but 6 hours of screen time is only mediocre for a phone of this size and price.
Oxygen OS isn’t a first-class ROM anymore OnePlus’ Android flavor is loaded with weird little glitches, and once new models land and OnePlus forgets about this phone, it will likely only get worse.
General camera performance While the colors are improved, OnePlus’ processing is still muddy, detail-destroying, and generally inconsistent. It’s “better” than previous OnePlus phones, but not as good as the competition.
FP sensor location It’s too close to the chin and not very ergonomic to hit.
5G carrier compatibility 5G in the US is still a bad time, and this phone only works with T-Mobile and Verizon for now. AT&T customers will only have LTE.
Price $ 969 is a lot of money for a phone that will only last three years.
